Podcast Shootout 1: Apple / Mac Computer Podcasts
As podcasting continues it relentless march across the globe, more and more podcasts are becoming available and unsurprisingly there is more than one show covering the same subject, but which one do you subscribe to? As part of a new feature here on PodFly - each week we will pick a podcast subject and give you low-down on them to help you choose the one that you will like the best.

The Mac ReviewCast brings us news of software and tips for your mac. Presented by Tim Verpoorten, owner of Surf-Bits.com, the show jogs along at a nice pace with good focus on the subject in hand. Reviews of software and how to make the most of them are offered and is a useful place to find out how to make the most of your time, if can you put up with the rather cheesy feel to the whole show especially the links and adverts, skip past those and you’re good to go. Also listeners have their say and offer a real world look at what it’s like to use a given program and offer tips. Slice of southern mac pie.

The MacCast has a more general feel to it and is not only a podcast about all things Macintosh but also everything else made by the people at Apple. Presented by Adam Christianson, a web designer who also serves on the Board of Directors for the San Diego Macintosh Users Group, he fills you in on the latest industry news, reports and rumors. If you’re a fan of Macs then no doubt you’re interested in other Apple related stuff, like the iPod, then your thirst for information won’t go unsatisfied here. Despite Adam’s rather dry approach, MacCast is the most enjoyable podcast of this trio to listen to and offers a wide range of information. Top of the class.

The MacAttack offers tips, tricks and hints on Macs and other related hardware and software. Presented by Steve Stanger, the show is a good source of information if you want to make the most of your Mac as a piece of hardware. Steve will give you latest news on where to go for repairs and information on settings for the Mac and other equipment. Although this show is useful, Steve speaks in a very purposeful manner, bit like a bored speak and spell with…. pauses….in-between…. each …. word and can be very tiresome, but never the less this podcast is a good source of information. A methodical marvel.

So which one do I subscribe to?
It seems as if the presenters of this trio of podcasters are well known to each other and they have deliberately got together and decided to cover the Mac from different directions so as not to step on each others toes. You may find yourself having to subscribe to all three to get the information you need but if you only have time for one show, I have no hesitation in recommending The MacCast as your choice, the wealth of information, presentation and Adam’s insight into all things Apple pushes it head and shoulders above the rest.

From the “bored speak and spell”: Thanks for including “The Mac Attack” in your podcast shootout. I was just wondering if your review is based on one episode, a few or all. I do ask for constructive criticism from my listeners so this isn’t a problem. I was just wondering what your review is based on. I do make a conscious effort to talk slower. Maybe too slow
People that know me and have heard me back in my radio days know my delivery used to be much more high-energy. I don’t know if that necessarily lends itself to the type of ‘cast I do.
I respect Adam and Tim and enjoy their shows too, but there is no planning between the three of us. Actually we three plus Joseph Nilo from the Mac Pro Podcast now do the Mac Roundtable podcast. You can find it on iTunes.
Thanks!

Hi steve, thanks for leaving your comments. Hope you were not put off by my review of your podcast, i did listen to a few shows and felt my comments are a fair reflection of what is a good, informative show that has an oddity.
Look forward to hearing some more of your work and hopefully catch some of that high energy radio days style of presentation.
All the best for you and your shows.

Daniel - I wasn’t put off at all. Like I said in my post I look at constructive criticism positively regardless of what comments are made. Again thanks for taking the time in reviewing the program and I feel I was in good company.
