Q:
What’s the easiest way to explain what a podcast is?
A: Audio shows that users subscribe to. Through the use of podcast
aggregators the shows are automatically delivered to your computer anytime a new
show is produced. You can then listen to them on any device of your own choosing
and at a time and place that is convenient for you.
Q:
When did you start podcasting?
A: Beginning of October
Q: Today, just 3-4 months after the term pocast was coined, and almost 2
months after you started, over 2,000 entries pop up when you enter MWGblog.com
into Google. Are you aware of most of these?
A: Wow, no idea so many would show up. A lot of them are from fans that
link to the site. Also, many of them are generated by some of the newspaper
articles my podcast has been featured in.
Q: Did you blog or journal BEFORE podcasting? Ever consider a career in
radio?
A: Never blogged, frankly didn’t understand the whole phenomenon. The
fact that podcasting revolved around audio and recorded speech made it
attractive for me. I would have never gotten excited about writing my opinions
about a film, but I can talk about them for hours. Never considered a career in
radio but licensing an edition of the reviews, maybe about new DVD releases, for
radio stations is always an idea.
Q: How much time do you spend daily
A: 1.5 Listening / 1.5 (2-3 times a week) Creating / 1 (keeping up with what is
going on/improving site etc.) Other/relative to Podcasting
Q: What percentage of podcasters that you have come upon are local, from SoCaL?
Would you say there are a high percentage of podcasters in tech-based cities
or is it too early to track trends?
A: Haven’t really paid much attention to the location of other podcasters. They
seem to be spread out all over the place. There are a good number is the SF Bay
area but that might be more coincidence than anything else. There are a few in
LA as well. More everyday.
Q: Who’s Who in Podcasting?
A: There are whole sites and wikkis devoted to this question – they are better
equipped to give you a complete answer.
Q: What is podcasting used for? When I grew up, they experimented with "pods"
ie. "Open Classrooms" in school. Could you see this technology being used for
school?
A: Education is fertile ground for podcasting. Some people are currently
exploring this area.
Q: Was the theme of reviewing movies apparent for podcasting, or did you ponder
other subjects? (What were they?)
A: I wanted to jump into podcasting and figured that a short format show with a
stable focus would be best. I have loved film all my life, and thought that
would be a good match. I knew it would hold my interest over the long run and I
felt that my enthusiasm for the subject would come through in the podcast.
Q: What TYPES of movies do you enjoy watching? Do you think one’s frame of mind
when watching a movie (worried, preoccupied, sad, watching a movie someone else
picked) can influence how you liked it?
A: I like all kinds of movies. I find myself going through phases where I try
to see most of the important films in a particular subgroup or by a particular
director. That approach has worked well for me. Good film is good film, the
idea is that it can transport you away for an hour or two from some of the
feelings you listed above.
Q: What’s the best movie you ever saw?
A: Citizen Kane
Q: What is the maximum amount of times you’ve watched the same movie
(Which one?)
A: When I was in high school I must have watched Sixteen Candles a hundred
times. Embarrassing looking back on it but you got to love Farmer Ted.
Q: Name some talented actors, both male and female.
A: Robert De Niro, Johnny Depp (takes risks), Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, George
C. Scott, Jimmy Stewart, Bill Pullman (shows up in some great films), Warren Oates, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Uma Thurman, Toni Collette, Gwyneth
Paltrow. Just
a quick sample the list would be too long.
Q: You recently found your podcast on a Japanese website. What was it in
reference to?
A: Podcasting. Someone finally translated it for me on my website, just said I
talk about both new and old films and encouraged people to subscribe.
Q: Cerritos College was graced with your presence a few weeks ago. Tell us
about that. Anything else exciting coming up?
A: I was asked to do two seminars at the Southern California Mac Fair on
podcasting. It was called Podcasting 101 and we covered the whole spectrum from
what podcasts are, where to find them and how to make them. Always trying to
line up new and exciting things for Reel Reviews and MWGblog.com.
